A Night in Bloom Events Floristry

December 30, 2010

Goodbye 2010, Hello 2011!

I just have to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all of our 2010 couples, friends, and family.  This has been an unbelievable year!  Because of your support, you have all in one way or another made my dreams a reality.  I absolutely adore working with flowers, and there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t recognize how lucky I am to do what I love for a living.  It is thanks to everyone’s support this year that A Night in Bloom has continued to grow, to the point that we are out of space in our little home based studio and moving to a much larger studio.

An extra special thank you to the following people:

Christina, Kim, Tori and the rest of the staff at Matthew’s daycare.  It is largely due to your constant patience and attention to our little man, that we were able to work the long hours that we managed to, knowing he was always in such good hands.  The way Bryan and I saw it, if we didn’t have a happy child, we didn’t have a business.  You can certainly look forward to looking after baby Violet in the very near future!

To Erica,  You are the BEST assistant ever!!!  We are beyond blessed to have you to turn to for everything under the sun, whether it’s meeting up on the tops of mountains, or playing endless rounds of Thomas the Train; you are one unbelievably positive person no matter what comes up, and we are beyond grateful to have you in our lives.

To Jodi, not every one can be taught floral design.  However, you are one of the few who can be!  When most people would run away screaming from the frustration, you persevere and your hard work has really paid off.  We are so fortunate to have you as our neighbor and friend.

And to my website girls, wedding pro, and flower friends, I cannot even begin to say thank you enough for all of your support and expertise which has helped to lead me down this path!

Cheers to the end of a wonderful fairytale of a year, and to the beginning of what I am certain will be a beautiful 2011!

The Bloomie Award Goes to…….Amanda and Jesse’s Wedding at Onteora Mountain House.

They were such a great couple to work with, and I am delighted to present them with their $100 prize, as well as a charitable donation in the same amount to their charity of choice, which is: The Capital District Community Gardens.  This is a wonderful charity, and I am so happy that Amanda and Jesse opened my eyes to it!   This organization is responsible for planting gardens and trees, coordinating veggie trucks, and food drives in under served areas.  To visit their website please go to http://www.cdcg.org

There were so many wonderfully beautiful weddings this year, but in the end this wedding received the most comments, especially on our Facebook page.  Please look for the same contest next year, which may include a few new categories.  It was such a pleasure working with all of our couples this year!  Thank you to all who participated!!!!

Jesse and Amanda’s Onteora Mountain House Wedding

This post was originally on our Facebook page, but I think it is only fair that I devote a blog to this wedding as well.

Amanda described wanting a rustic, yet romantic wedding since it was taking place at the gorgeous Onteora Mountain House.  She expressed her love of Peonies and larger bloomed Roses.  Jesse on the other hand, like many men, expressed not wanting to wear a very frilly boutonniere.  He preferred the look of more rustic elements.  We eventually all agreed on using Peonies and Antique Garden Roses for the hand-tied bouquets, mixed with more pods and fresh herbs.  The boutonnieres consisted mainly of pods and herbs.

The centerpieces were a little different from the personal flowers, but still had the same feeling as the bouquets.  Despite the fact that we were using orchids that varied from the personal flowers, we still incorporated twigs, river rock, and moss to tie in with the surroundings of the mountain setting.  During her sample appointment Amanda liked both styles so much that after discussing them with Jesse they opted to use both options.

I think it is so important for couples to have what makes them happy on their wedding day.  Many designers will tell you that you MUST use the same flowers in your personal flowers, ceremony flowers, and reception flowers, but this has never been my philosophy.  I really think it is most important to be surrounded by what makes you happiest.  And if this means having Peonies for your bouquet and Orchids on your tables, so be it!  I was delighted with this wedding and so were Jesse and Amanda!

Moving on Up….1/1/11!!!!!

It’s official, A Night in Bloom is moving on to a new, bigger and better studio space!!!!!!!  We will no longer be a home-based operation, however we will continue to work from a studio to keep our rates affordable.

The new location is at 77 Cornell Street inside the Shirt Factory, Kingston’s only community of creative space artist’s lofts.  This building is located directly across from the Kingston Post Office.  I have been shopping for the ideal studio space for so long, and when I saw this space on the ground floor, I knew I had found the right location!  For those of you who have never been inside this historic building, it is fabulous!  There is no way you can overlook the exposed brick walls, hardwood floors and 14 foot ceilings.  If you would like further information about this property or other similar properties check out: http://www.artistworkspace.com.

There are a host of talented artists, musicians and photographers here, in fact directly across from my suite is Keith Ferris Photo, who does beautiful wedding work!  Check out his work at http://www.keithferrisphoto.com.  As if this weren’t good enough, there is also a large light filled studio for rent by the day, right down the hallway from my suite (and super affordable!).  This space may be rented for rehearsal dinners, showers and just about any other type of function you can think of.  Although I haven’t had a chance to meet all of my neighbors in this community I see that there are businesses such as a yoga studio, craftsmen, stained glass artists, performing artists, and so many, many others.  Talk about an inspiring work space!!  I could not be happier with this location!

Now that we finally have more space we will be offering a few new services; among them will be DIY hours, by the bunch flowers, workshops, lectures, parties, and our rental offerings will continue to expand.  Please stay tuned for even more in the months and year to come.  If you are not already on our e-mail list, Facebook, or Twitter pages now would be a good time to get in touch if you would like to be kept up to date on our most exclusive deals and events.

We hope to be up and running by January 1st.  Pictures will be coming as soon as the renovations are completed!  I can’t even begin to say thank you enough to those of you who have encouraged me and continue to help me to realize my dreams.  There are no words….

Tom and Liz’s Wedding at the Villa Barone

What a great girl Liz is!  She would always make me laugh with her hysterically funny e-mails.  Liz was one of the first brides who opted to rent our candelabras.  To keep them simple yet elegant, we filled them with all Blue Hydrangea and rich purple toned Carnations.  Half of the tables consisted of these tall beauties, and the other half of the tables were filled with masses of the same flowers placed in chunky glass cube vases.  I wish I had more time to photograph this wedding but unfortunately this was a large order and we had very little time to get it all accomplished.

Congratulations Tommy and Liz!!!

I was really mad at the white Dahlia’s intended for Liz’s bouquet, they were simply awful!  So I returned them to my supplier, I ordered several more bunches from another supplier and they too were unusable!  It is amazing how you can order the same flowers time and time again, but there can be so much variation in quality from one week to the next!  I had to do something to make this bouquet as special as I could, so I added small touches of filigree leaves that I took from a pulled apart broach I had.  I felt that the leaves echoed the black onyx and crystal accents on the broach and crystal picks Liz gave me for the bouquet and the wrap.

Heather gives birth to a baby Violet

After a very long wedding season, I finally gave birth to my baby girl, Violet Grace on 10/20/10, weighing 8 lbs. 13 ozs. and measuring 20 inches.  And yes, of course I named my daughter after a flower!  It was between naming her Charlotte (after the red rose with the same name) and Violet through my entire pregnancy.  I think the name really suits her sweet “go with the flow” personality.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Violet flowers, they are some of the sweetest you will find.  Not only are they delightfully feminine and petite, they are also used to adorn cakes and pastries and for making violet syrup.  Violets are used in many French candies, for wine making, and medicinal purposes.

Violets have been cultivated since 500 B.C. or earlier. The Ancient Greeks considered these flowers to be symbols of fertility and love, and used them to concoct love potions.

Violet flowers are considered a symbol of modesty.  Both Greek and Roman Mythology tell the tale of one of the Goddess Diana’s nymph friends being chased unrelentingly by Diana’s twin brother Apollo.  The nymphs had all sworn to stay maidens, so Diana turned the nymph into a Violet flower to protect her.  There are plenty of other myths out there associated with Violets, but I think this one is my favorite.

Violets have religious significance as well.  They are associated with Mary and modesty, the religious name Viola Odorata is our Lady’s Modesty.  Violets denote spiritual wisdom, humility and faithfulness.  These meanings make Violets the ideal flower to give for a 50th Wedding Anniversary.

It is said that when one dreams of Violets, this is a sign of success and moving ahead in life.

HUGE THANKS to everyone for all the encouraging e-mails, thoughtful gifts, and cards through my pregnancy and for our sweet girl’s arrival!!!!
