Announcing for the first time, the Bloomie Awards!!!

Daisy Business Logo

The petals and stems have been flying across the studio these days.  We feel beyond blessed to have the work that we do this year, and would like to thank everyone so, so, so much for your support of our small business!!   It seems after every event we do, we get tons of requests for “pictures please” from many of you on our Facebook page.  Everyone loves a wedding, and everyone loves to gush over the beautiful details of the day, especially the flowers.  Which got us to thinking…we should give an award to honor the most beautiful and most commented on wedding.

Announcing for the first time ever, the Bloomie Awards!  Since this is only our first year of the Bloomies, only one grand prize will be awarded for The Best Overall Wedding Flowers and Decor.  If this year is a success next year we hope to offer more awards in different categories including: Best Bridal Bouquet, Best Personal Flowers, Best Color Scheme or Theme, Greenest, and Best Overall.

This year’s award winning couple will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card and we will also be making a $100 donation to a charity of the winning couple’s choice.

To Enter:

If you are interested in participating, please gather up the very best wedding pictures you have (all professional photos will have photo credit given, and a link to the photographer’s website), along with a list of all of your wedding vendors with links to their websites or contact info.  Be sure to double check with your friends and family if you are planning to submit pictures of them to the contest, as they will be appearing on this blog.  Also double check with your photographer about their policies.  Once you have all of this together please submit it to us via e-mail to our main e-mail: heather@anightinbloom.com

All entries must be submitted no later than November 1, 2010, but the sooner the better if you want to gather as many comments as possible.  The winners will be announced in early December, just in time to kick off the holiday season!

Rules:

The winners will be determined based on how many comments are posted on the couple’s blog post.  Comments made by A Night in Bloom or the Admin. will not be counted. Any 2010 wedding pics that we have already posted on our Facebook page will have their comments applied to the contest tally as well (again, with the exception of our own comments), this means only weddings before June 7,2010.  All posts after that will not be counted.

Tips:

Send an e-mail to all your friends and family, post about the contest on Facebook, or Tweet about it. People seem to love images of flowers and emotions.  Photos including Mom’s pinning boutonnieres, friends hugging while holding bouquets, flower girls wearing halos, and babies with flowers are always a huge hit. Of course the details such as all the bridesmaids holding their bouquets against their dresses, and the bride in her dress holding her bouquet are always favorites too! Keep in mind everyone can comment, not just your friends and family but our other readers and wedding pro friends as well, so neutral pics without people in them are good options too. If any photographers out there would like to submit your favorite examples of flowers and emotions for me to attach to this post, I would be happy to.

This is a great opportunity for any couples looking to have a little extra spending money during the holidays, but also for what we are sure will be a worthy charity.

Thanks for reading and good luck to all of our 2010 couples!!!

Spring Butterfly Daisy Themed Wedding

Once again here is another wedding that originally appeared on our Facebook page…..

First of all let me just say how in LOVE I was with Krystal’s bouquet.  All Peonies and large Gerbera/ Gerber Daisies in all shades of pink and blush tones.  The Peonies were just magnificent on this particular week.  Krystal was such a sweet girl she really deserved them!

As you can probably tell from the pictures, Krystal really loved butterflies and Daisies. She would have loved for me to be able to produce a Purple Gerber Daisy, but unfortunately there is no such thing (at least at this point).  After much deliberation, Krystal decided that a combination of brightly colored Daisies and wildflowers would be lovely.  The end result was so colorful and happy!!  It is unfortunate that her ceremony had to take place indoors because of thunderstorms, however despite the troublesome weather, at least the flowers were as bright and pretty as could be!

Garden Roses

Yellow garden rose and delphinium

These were a gift, but I think they would also be gorgeous as a centerpiece.  Unfortunately with all of the technology we have, we are still unable to create computers with scratch and sniff options. Can we please get an app for that Apple people?  Anyway the fragrance from these roses is delicious!  Each color has a different fragrance.  These yellow roses almost have a lemony scent to them.  Aside their wonderful fragrance, they are stunningly beautiful and unique.  Certainly not a bargain bloom, but as more South American growers continue to grow them, I think the prices will become more reasonable.  Hope you enjoy them, I know I did!

Alder’s Spring Design Show

This was such an inspiring event to attend!!  The designs you see here are the work of Kevin Ylvisaker, AIFD.  Kevin was so fun to watch, incredibly talented, informative, and whitty!   I wish he had his own TV show!!  There was so much information to take in, however I will highlight some of the most important trends discussed.

First of all the color of the year for 2010 is TURQUOISE, with purple being a close second.  This came as no surprise.  Metal elements are very hot right now, especially silver.  And monochromatic displays are still favored over unusual color pallets.

One revolutionary trend we are seeing is the use of moss to fill in arrangements, instead of greenery!  This trend was not well received by all of the florists.  We are still seeing the use of greenery but less of it, and greenery is being looked at more like another flower, rather than a background design element.  Which is making tropical and unusual leaves increasingly popular.

Another trend is toward horizontal and vertical designs.  Predictions were made that the once popular pyramid designs (think one sided alter arrangements, and funeral baskets) are quickly going to become a thing of the past.  I for one, was overjoyed to hear this news!

The other thing that made me want to jump up out of my seat and cheer was the announcement that Gladiolas are BACK!  Did you hear that people?  Yes, the flowers that so many of you tell me are for funerals are very popular right now.  I absolutely love working with these beauties and am so glad that they are making such a huge comeback.

What a wonderful show this was!  It was so great seeing old friends and meeting new ones!!  I can’t wait to attend the next one!!

This was my favorite arrangement of the night!  I have a lot more pictures of this one, but with lots of other people in the shots.

Monochromatic example, filler flower is used here but in bunches, not all over the arrangement.

Tada!  Turquoise!

The Blue Vanda Orchids were my favorite flower of the night!  I thought I was going to have to be dragged away from them!  But look everyone, they are paired with Carnations, and they still look gorgeous!!

DSCF4368

Pomanders are still very popular.

DSCF4369

Beautiful garden style vase, which has the modern twist of the tropical leaf.  I was so distracted by the Orchids that I forgot what other elements were discussed with this one.

Designing for Generation Y. Notice these arrangements have been greened in with moss!  What I really liked was the addition of apple green wire wrapping the Gerber Daisy stems.

Larry and Janet’s Wedding, Hotel Thayer, West Point

ceremony decor with shamrocks

Janet is a bride who knew exactly what she wanted as far as flowers and decor for her wedding.  I have always heard that these brides exist, but I had never met one until I met Janet!  The first thing she told me was that she loved red.  She wanted to use all red and white flowers.  Hooray  I thought!  I too, love the color red, and seldom have the opportunity to use it in most weddings I design.  In addition to the love of this color, Janet also expressed her love of all types of tall, spiky flowers.

We agreed on using a combination of spiky flowers such as Dendrobium and James Storei Orchids, Larkspur, Stock, Lisianthus, fragrant Myrtle, Sword Fern, and Curly willow.  In order to make the arrangements a little more dense we also used a combination of Red Charlotte Roses (my personal favorite, because they open so beautifully), Red Freedom Roses (which are also gorgeous, but they stay a little more closed and formal looking), Hypericum Berries, Hydrangea, fragrant Freesia, and a few red and white Ranuculas, which I added at the very last second because they are so very delicate and high maintenance.  Not that high maintenance is ever a draw back in my book, they were just too gorgeous to pass up!

Speaking of which, you will notice there are no bouquets pictured in this blog.  That is because they were all done in silks, and you all know I only work in fresh flowers.  For Janet I made an exception, because she gave me a very compelling argument.  However, I do not promote this service and do not wish to answer e-mail and phone calls inquiring about silk weddings.

You may be wondering about the green petals on the aisle in some of the pictures, they are silk shamrocks.  Janet wanted to be sure some of her Irish heritage was reflected throughout the day and requested that she have shamrocks to walk across instead of the traditional rose petals.  You will also see the little pots of gold on the tables, which she took the time to make herself!  To be sure that the Groom had some recognition of his own, Janet requested that I place handcuffs on picks into each arrangement, since Larry is a retired State Trooper.  The table numbers were even Troop numbers!

This was the first wedding I have done in recent years working with fabrics, and I cannot tell you what a visual impact it had!  Not everyone has the type of budget for this sort of look, but if you do, I highly recommend it!  The supplier I used had every color fabric you could imagine, including the ever popular pewter and champagne we keep seeing this year.

Although I wasn’t there to see the wedding take place, I’m sure everyone had a blast!  How could they not have, with all of the little details that this thoughtful Bride included on such a special day.

I hope you all enjoy the pictures, more professional ones are coming soon from the photographer.

Exciting News!

As many of you know we will be planting our very own vintage rose garden this year. In addition to this exciting project, we are growing something a little less floral this season…

A   B A B Y !

Heather is expecting the latest addition to our family in Mid October.  She will be taking maternity leave beginning around October 24, 2010 through Thanksgiving. Consult appointments will still be available during this time, but must be at the studio.

So far this pregnancy has been just like the first, no problems to report whatsoever. If you are one of our October brides, you already know about this, and a plan in in place should an emergency occur.

Fortunately Heather is one of the few people who actually feels better when she is pregnant, than when she is not. For those of you who are not familiar with her first pregnancy, Heather worked full time up until she gave birth, during the same time she and her husband moved into their first house. (They moved three weeks before the baby arrived).  Heather had a c-section and put together her first wedding a week and a half later. A Night in Bloom was underway by the time her son turned 4 months old.

Cheers to another baby blessed enough to grow up in a house full of flowers!
