The Winners of The 2011 Bloomie Award, Dennis and Sarah, and One Very Special Little Baby!

This was a very close contest!!  However the votes (or should we say “likes”!) have been counted and with 81 votes our runner up was Jamie and Jillian’s Locust Grove Wedding, http://blog.anightinbloom.com/?p=1999 .  And our Grand Prize winners, winning $100 for themselves and $100 to the charity of their choice was Sarah and Dennis’  West Park Winery Wedding!!! http://blog.anightinbloom.com/?p=1814

Not only are they just the sweetest couple, but their charity was such a good one!  Sarah and Dennis asked that their charitable donation be made to a little baby named, Noah.  He was born just this past July, with a very rare condition known as Adams-Oliver.  There are many conditions that go along with this disease, but one of the most severe effects of it is that his skull was not fully formed.  He basically was born with no skull/skin covering the cap of his head.  There are several other symptoms he had, but this was the most severe. Since he has been born, Noah has had countless surgeries and many scares.  But one of the last surgeries he had was very successful in covering the wound with a skin graft which took 100%, and he is now home with his mommy and daddy.  He is thriving at home and now able to be a “normal” baby, not hooked up to monitors and such at a hospital.  This family has had the most trying 4-5 months anyone could ever imagine any family going through, with medical bills that I don’t even want to imagine on top of everything!

Noah is the Grandson of one of Sarah’s very good friends from work. There is a fund setup in Noah’s name, the Noah Christopher Smith Fund, which helps with these outragous bills.  A Night in Bloom is delighted to make a donation to this charity, and for those of you who wish to do the same, or learn more about this remarkable baby and his family, here is a link to a page that Noah’s parents setup for him, telling Noah’s story (to read his story, go to the journal.  Go to the last page of the journal to start from the beginning of his story).

Anyone wishing to make donations directly to the family, please contact a Night in Bloom for the correct mailing address.
Congratulations Dennis and Sarah, and Happy Holidays to all of our couples!!!!  Huge THANK YOU to all the participants (and amazing photographers!) who helped make this contest possible!!!

14 Questions to Ask Your Florist

One of our Coral Charm Peony Centerpieces

Selecting any wedding vendor can be an overwhelming task, however deciding on a florist is one of the most difficult ones for sure!  After doing your preliminary research as described in our earlier blog here: http://blog.anightinbloom.com/?p=1725 Here is a list we have put together to help you narrow down your selections, and pick one that is just right for you and your needs.  Some good questions to ask while first meeting with a florist are…

  1. How many weddings do you do a year?
  2. How many events do you handle at a time?
  3. Who will be designing my wedding florals? Ask to see photos of the designer’s recent work.
  4. How many years of experience does the business have?  How many years of experience does the designer have?
  5. Ask to see a portfolio. Make sure that this is work that the florist has done personally, and is not just stock photography of the work that they can do.
  6. Who will be delivering my wedding florals?  Is this person a designer, and can they assist me if I need a corsage at the last minute, or any adjustments made to my wedding décor?
  7. What are your policies if I would like to bring my own candles, or pick up my designs to save a little money?
  8. What is your design philosophy?
  9. What are your policies regarding payments, contracts, and deposits.
  10. Are you insured?
  11. Do you have a backup plan if something should happen to you or your staff during my wedding week?
  12. Where can I see some of your recent reviews?
  13. How much of your business involves event work?  How much of your business involves everyday orders?
  14. If you choose to work with a freelance designer, studio, or boutique business, be sure they have all of the proper professional equipment, especially a cooler. It is true that not all flowers require refrigeration, however certain varieties MUST have refrigeration, and if there is an unusually hot spell during your wedding week, you want to be sure your flowers are going to look their best.

Hopefully these questions will help you to narrow down your selection and pick the perfect match for you and your unique needs!  Happy Planning!

5 Helpful Tips for Preparing to Meet with a Florist

One of our ever popular Milk Glass centerpieces, containing mostly cottage flowers.

Many couples come to us having never had to purchase custom florals before.  Perhaps the last time you were in a flower shop was when you needed to order a holiday arrangement for your Aunt, or perhaps you had the very unfortunate experience of having to order sympathy arrangements.  Maybe you enjoy gardening and growing your own flowers, but have no idea where to begin when it comes to fresh cut flowers.  Perhaps you often buy bunches of flowers from the grocery store, but have no idea what the difference is between by the bunch bouquets and professionally designed creations.  Or maybe you are like so many of our clients, who are afraid to even walk into a florist with so little knowledge of what to expect.  Not to worry, we are here to help you!

We have written this blog  for your convenience, to help you in your search for the perfect floral designer or florist.  Whether you choose to work with us, or one of our friendly competitors, we wish you the most beautiful wedding day possible!

Find your Favorites

Do some preliminary research and locate some businesses you are interested in learning more about.  After reading their most recent reviews, send each business an inquiry e-mail, or give them a phone call to see if you may schedule a consult with them, either face to face or via phone or skype.  Rather than meet with every single business in town, I would advise narrowing your selections to no more than 3 businesses.  Most floral designers charge very similar fees, so you are really shopping more for a personality fit and a creative match for your vision, rather than price when it comes to this type of wedding pro.

Here are our tips on how to better prepare for your meeting:

  1. Do you research about different arrangement types and prices, so you can be better informed about what types of designs you can get for your budget.  FTD, Teleflora, and many other wire service websites offer tons of everyday arrangements (which many times can also be used as centerpieces) in all shapes and colors and price points.  Look at the sympathy arrangements to get ideas about larger items such as alter arrangements, buffet pieces, and place card tables (funeral baskets).  Please keep in mind many of these prices may be higher in the case of weddings where there is far more labor involved, and many popular blooms for the season come with a premium price tag.
  2. After doing initial price research, set a realistic budget. If you have 15 centerpieces, ceremony décor, bouquets and boutonnieres for a 16 person wedding party and a bridal bouquet, don’t expect to do it all on a $500 budget.
  3. Compile a list or bring photos of your favorite flower types, colors, and styles. You may also want to bring a list or photos of flowers, colors and styles that you don’t want, so your florist knows what to avoid.
  4. Bring photos of your dress, and the bridesmaids’ dresses, invitations, fabric swatches, or any other items that may better help describe the look and feel of the event, this way you can be sure that your flowers will match that feel.
  5. Try to limit your additional friends and family to no more than two or three people.  When a larger crowd comes along to your consult, it can many times become overwhelming with everyone’s opinions about what looks best. As a bride, you don’t want to be talked out of, or talked into choosing something that isn’t what you truly want for your big day.

It is also important that you ask the right questions while meeting with potential wedding florists so that you can gauge if their work will suite your needs and wants. Here is another useful blog to check out to help you in that department: http://blog.anightinbloom.com/?p=2273 Happy planning everyone!
